Session Abstract Five years ago, the perception of Africa in the global REN community was that of an isolated continent. Over the last five years, emerging national and regional RENs have established continental and global visibility and are now rolling out infrastructure to enable regional and global collaboration as well as advanced applications. This session will examine: - The Regional RENs – ASREN, UbuntuNet, and WACREN, to provide an overview of what is happening at the policy and organizational level in establishing viable national and regional research and education networks, with some focus on status, successes, and challenges; - The Status of Continental and Global Infrastructure, giving an overview of the status of fiber within and to Africa, and to what extent RENs are accessing it. The presentation will also highlight the role of development partners. - Applications utilizing REN infrastructure in Africa. This will present cases of ongoing exploitation of REN infrastructure in Africa, and look ahead at other opportunities for regional and global collaboration at the content and applications level - Strategic Alliances – this will examine the current and potential linkages with RENs in other continents and explore how these can be exploited for mutual benefit
