Teaching and Learning through Immersive Telepresence: Lessons Learned from First Deployments

Session Abstract The latest generation of video systems deploys HD audio and video technologies to deliver an immersive, telepresence user experience. The adoption of telepresence started in enterprises but several universities also deployed telepresence for distance teaching and learning. Now that these telepresence systems have been in operation for more than a year, it is time to discuss what worked and what did not. Georgetown University deployed Polycom RPX telepresence system between Georgetown's campus in Washington and its new campus in Qatar. John Chapman, CIO at Georgetown University in Qatar will discuss the challenges around connecting a remote campus and how telepresence helps remove distance. He will share his experience with scheduling systems usage across (8) time zones, negotiating service contracts, and making sure bandwidth and QOS are available to support applications. Stefan Karapetkov, Emerging Technologies Director, Polycom, will address the technologies enabling the immersive experience: HD video and audio, cameras and displays, speakers and microphones. He will also discuss bandwidth and QOS requirements for telepresence - jitter, latency, and packet loss - and mechanisms to recover from networks degradation. This session will benefit universities that have opened remote campuses and to universities planning to do so.
