Session Abstract For suspected network problems, the number one go-to tool for the connected public is “traceroute”. Every OS comes with it, anyone can use it, and according to almost anything you can Google, it will tell you where your network problem is. So, what’s wrong with traceroute? The large number of traceroute-based tickets in the queue of any NOC seems to indicate many users do not understand traceroute’s workings or its limitations. This talk will explore some of the uses and misuses of traceroute, help end-users and network operators interpret traceroute output more accurately, and hopefully increase the quality of traceroute-based tickets received at our community’s NOCs and helpdesks.
