Session Abstract NOAA will receive American Recovery and Reinvestment Act ( ARRA, aka Stimulus) funds to enhance its global climate modeling capabilities. In support of the new High Performance Computing (HPC) systems that will be built for this purpose, NOAA's Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR), in cooperation with the NOAA HPCC and CIO office, is preparing to build a new research networking capability. This new network, which we call the NOAA Research Network (NRN), will connect new HPC sites to several existing NOAA research related centers around the country. We are currently in the design process and although our plans are not mature we would like to share them to get valuable feedback. Some of the topics we will discuss are: - Building a reliable, yet flexible, research network - Ensuring 10 Gpbs availability using redundant 10 Gbps links - Using MPLS for traffic engineering and L2 and L3 VPNS. - Knitting RONs and R&E Network components into a single network infrastructure - Colo Woes - Certification and Accreditation of a Federal Research Network: assuring NRN meets government-mandated security standards outlined in NIST draft 800-53. - IPv6 - Network management
