EVOGreen Initiative

October 07, 2009, 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
UTC/GMT -5 hours (CDT)
Location: Navarro

Philippe Galvez , California Institute of Technology

Session Abstract While EVO’s original objective was to serve the needs of nationally and globally distributed projects in the high energy and nuclear physics communities, meeting their requirements for usability, quality, scalability, reliability, and cost, EVO’s use has now expanded to serve many disciplines, and a broad range of research organizations large and small. EVO has recently been awarded the 2009 Internet2 IDEA award due to its service to the HEP community, its technical merit and its broad impact. The EVO service is now running over 5,000 meetings per month with participants from different disciplines connected nationally and internationally. EVO is being deployed nationally in Australia to serve the research and academic community from all disciplines and it is also started to be used as a general platform for eLearning at several Universities such as at the University of São Paulo in Brazil and UPMC (Université Pierre et Marie Curie) in France. The session will announce the launch of the EVOGreen initiative with the main objective to build a social network based on a low cost subscription model. The vision associated with this initiative will be the following: “help reduce the carbon footprint and make our planet safer.” Via this initiative, we intend to provide general information about this topic and the different efforts in this area and also make available a light version of our advanced collaborative tool “EVO” to help reduce business travel, work commute, and associated activities that significantly increase the carbon footprint. More detailed information will be provided during the session.
