Session Abstract In 2003, Merit Network and its University Members collaborated in changing the overall strategy in providing and provisioning services to Michigan’s research and education community. The strategy was to move to a facilities based network infrastructure to reach all of Michigan’s public universities. We will discuss the antecedents of this new strategy and how Merit brought together not only the public universities but other higher education institutions, K-12 schools, public libraries and governmental agencies to maximize network utilization and create new services to provide a sustainable model. We will share the economic outcomes and how these new collaboration opportunities are being realized including sharing of network assets, applications, staff, and services. We will present case studies of these opportunities including the use of the Internet2 network and its community partnerships.
