The Fall 2005 Internet2 Member Meeting was attended by representatives
from 276 different institutions and organizations who took part in over
114 track sessions, workshops, Working Groups, Special Interest Groups,
Birds of a Feather sessions, and other meetings. Out of the 722
attendees, we were pleased to welcome 160 first-time registrants as
well as members from 48 international organizations.
This fall, the program included a workshop on the progress and challenges of building a national research and education network in Africa, an open NPPAC advisory council meeting, and an open Campus Expectations Task Force Meeting. Two new SIGs: Collaboration and Archaeology; and four new BoFs: Game Technology and Advanced Networks, Science and Engineering Applications Coordination, Content Delivery, and Lecture Objects--also participated in the meeting for the first time.
Meeting highlights included general session speakers Richard Bendis, CEO of Innovation Philadelphia, discussing the relationship between academia and industry for collaborative research, and Dr. Larry Peterson, Chair of the Princeton Computer Science Department, discussing his views on a "Strategy for Continually Reinventing the Internet." Internet2 president and CEO Doug Van Houweling presented his insights into the future of networking research. His talk "Internet2: Focusing on the Future," examined the path ahead for advanced academic networking in light of the increasing technological capabilities and expanding community requirements.
The meeting's Gala Museum Reception, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, featured a program on new techniques in the fields of archaeology and anthropology that utilize advanced networking capabilities--from sharing CT scans of mummies to using high-quality DVTS video streams so collaborators in multiple remote locations could discuss rare museum pieces.
