Summary
The Spring 2004 Internet2 Member Meeting was held Monday, April 19 through Wednesday, April 21, at the Crystal Gateway Marriott Hotel in Arlington, Virginia. Pre- and post-meeting activities, including tutorials, working group meetings, and workshops, were held on Sunday, April 18 and Thursday, April 22. A reception for International MoU partners was held on Sunday evening, April 18, and a Welcome Reception for all attendees took place on Monday evening, April 19. Attendees were also welcome to visit the Internet2 advanced applications demos at the Broadband Summit 2004 located in the Ronald Reagan International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. on April 20.

The location of the meeting in Arlington , Virginia , in close proximity to Washington, D.C. provided opportunities for interaction with and exploration of the collaborative relationships between the Internet2 community and the federal agencies that provide funding and support for advanced network applications.

Key areas of focus for Spring 2004 included cyberinfrastructure initiatives, cooperative funding arrangements among federal agencies, global e-science collaborations, security on high-performance networks, and advanced applications underway on member campuses, deployment of middleware capabilities, and advancements in the K/20 community.

The Spring 2004 Member Meeting attracted approximately 700 attendees. This total included 329 University members, 72 Affiliate members, 86 Corporate members, 140 non-members (includes Internet2 staff), 80 MoUs and MoU-associated organizations, and 2 other.

Attendee remarks about the overall benefit of the Spring meeting were diverse and positive. Many mentioned networking with colleagues and hearing what leaders had to say about future directions as key reasons for attending the member meeting. Others appreciated the breadth of topics addressed by the meeting, the industry collaboration models, and the opportunity to meet and talk with members of the various Councils.

During the Opening Plenary on April 20, Laurie Burns, Internet2 Director of Applications Programs and Member Activities welcomed attendees and introduced Internet2 President and CEO, Doug Van Houweling, who discussed the importance of community participation, commitment, and collaboration to advance the future of the Internet. Sangtae Kim, Director for the Division of Shared Cyberinfrastructure, National Science Foundation, also offered brief remarks to the audience. Steven Papermaster, Chairman of Powershift Ventures LP, and a member of the President's Council of Advisors in Science and Technology (PCAST), addressed attendees on various aspects of the National Roadmap for Science and Technology. Finally, Rich Carlson, Internet2, presented the annual Land Speed Record awards to a team consisting of members from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and CERN. The team transferred data across nearly 11,000 kilometers at an average rate of 6.25 gigabits per second (Gbps), nearly 10,000 times faster than a typical home broadband connection, from Los Angeles, California to Geneva, Switzerland. 

William Wulf, President of the National Academy of Engineering , provided the Closing Plenary on Wednesday, April 21. His talk, “Internet 2020,” discussed the rapid improvements in networking and challenged the Internet2 community to anticipate and examine the global effects of the technology we create and deploy.

At this meeting, Internet2 initiated a pilot of the Corporate Presentation Room. This was an exciting new venue offered to Internet2 Corporate members, who presented their information in a variety of formats. Presentations were held during the day on April 20 and April 21.
