Spring 2003 Internet2 Member Meeting
Meeting Summary

April 9-11, 2003
Arlington, VA

The Spring 2003 Internet2 Member Meeting was held Wednesday, April 9 through Friday, April 11, 2003, at the Crystal Gateway Marriott Hotel in Arlington, Virginia. Over 600 attendees participated in the Meeting.

Program

The Spring program included track sessions, working group meetings, status reports and updates, Birds-of-Feather sessions (BoFs), and tutorials. Session tracks included Advanced Applications, Middleware, Network Planning and Engineering, Relationships and Partnerships, and Video.

The Spring 2003 Opening Plenary was delivered by Peter A. Freeman, Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE), who presented his perspectives on the research programs that NSF is encouraging to meet the challenges for advanced networking. The Closing Plenary, given by David B. Nelson, director of the National Coordination Office (NCO) for Information Technology Research and Development and a member of the Senior Executive Service, described the federal government’s activities in optical networks, middleware, and grid computing and provided information about the recently established High Computing Revitalization Task Force. Two “Super Track” sessions were held at the Meeting and included information about significant and highly visible activities: the National Science Foundation’s recently published Cyberinfrastructure Report, and progress toward a national optional network infrastructure.

Other Activities
Other sessions at the Meeting included meetings on international partnerships, corporate collaborations, K-20 community efforts, and security issues. The meeting also featured a demonstration of Shibboleth, a collaborative effort to build an inter-institutional standard for web access control; a lunch-time meeting for applications and middleware representatives; and a lunch built around displays of Internet2 working group information.

Poster Sessions were also held to showcase the work of Internet2 corporate members.

Land Speed Competition Winners
There were two separate winners of the Internet2 Land Speed Record Competition and they were recognized during the Meeting.

Internet2's Intellectual Property Framework became effective starting with the Spring 2003 Member Meeting. It primarily impacts the activities of Internet2 Working Groups, Working Group Projects, and Internet2 Area Initiatives and Projects.
