| For the past 18 months, NMI (NSF Middleware Initiative) Integration Testbed sites have been evaluating and implementing both enterprise and grid-based middleware. Several sites are leveraging this opportunity to examine the need for campus-wide grids as the next level of institutional infrastructure. While these sites are at various stages of implementation, there are strong common elements within their approach. Reasons for exploring implementation range from the cost-savings that can be realized through the sharing of expensive computational power, storage, and instrumentation to advancement of "the Grid" as a new way of working together. The path for proceeding follows a technical path, but also necessitates building awareness among researchers and IT staff and the identification and often development of grid-enabled applications. Once implementation is underway, it is necessary to make technology decisions and proceed while also tracking the rapid development taking place in grids technology today. In this presentation, NMI Testbed sites with active campus grid initiatives will step through the rationale, approach, and process of this development. |
