Fall 2003 Internet2 Member Meeting

NETWORK STORY
Building the Network

Internet2 is a collaborative organization so it is fitting that Internet2 Member Meetings are the result of an enormous collaborative effort that includes member institutions, corporate partners, Internet2 staff and non-members alike. The commitment and energy that were dedicated to the project by the staffs of Indiana University and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis contributed to a smooth network deployment. In particular, we would like to recognize Doug Pearson, Dave Jent, Steve Peck, Grover Browning, Damon Beals, Leon Belcher, Cheryl Kile, Bill Fulk, Kirt Guinn, Al Hodgen, Camille Davis-Alfs, Carolyn Carver and the staffs of the Global NOC and University Information Technology Services Support Center.

This fall's meeting location at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown is connected to the new 10Gigabit-per-second (Gbps) Abilene Backbone. Through the generous donations of Cisco Systems we are able to connect the hotel to the Abilene backbone at 10Gbps and allow for the network distribution to the rest of the hotel. Juniper Networks contributed the 10Gigabit Ethernet (GE) interface that allowed for the other half of the 10Gbps connection from the hotel to Abilene. Internet2 sponsor Ixia has generously provided test equipment that was used to test the 10GE link that connects the hotel network to the Abilene backbone and the 1GE links.

Even with the generous donations of equipment from our corporate partners and sponsor, the network could not have been built without fiber. We would like to thank Time Warner Telecom for providing two pairs of fiber that create the physical links between the hotel to both the Abilene node and the Indiana GigaPoP, which provides Internet2 and commodity Internet connectivity, respectively. Special thanks are due to Qwest for their continued support of the Internet2 member meetings by facilitating the necessary connections to complete the circuits for this year's meeting. Internet2 would like to thank all those whose efforts have made the Fall 2003 Internet2 Member Meeting possible.
