October 13 - 16, 2003
Indianapolis, IN

Deadline for Submission: Monday, June 23
Notification: Thursday, July 3

Internet2 is soliciting advanced networking applications demonstrations for the Fall 2003 Internet2 Member Meeting, 13-16 October in Indianapolis, IN. The fall member meeting will offer multiple venues and opportunities for demonstrations. One set of demos will run 13-15 October at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown, location of the fall member meeting. In addition, demonstrations will also take place in conjunction with an evening gala reception, which will be held at the Indiana State Museum on 15 October. The museum demo venues include an IMAX Theatre and the Dean & Barbara White Auditorium. More information about all the demo venues can be found below.

Why Demo?

Over 70 Internet2 member institutions have participated in demonstrations at Internet2-related events. Demos provide several opportunities, including:

  • Demonstrating, to an international audience, the interesting applications we have under development or in use.
  • Engaging the interest and imagination of those who may develop their own applications after seeing the demos.
  • Giving the demonstrators an opportunity to show off their efforts and to seek new partners and sponsors for their efforts.

Internet2 university members, corporate members, affiliate members, and international partners are all invited to participate in the demos. We’d also like to feature demos that showcase how Internet2 is enabling members to find new methods of scientific communication, collaboration, and visualization—often in partnership between U.S. researchers, faculty, students and their overseas counterparts. Applications from all disciplines are welcome. The primary objective is that we showcase network-intensive applications that demonstrate the reality and the potential of Internet2 environments. Demos that illustrate how Internet2 can facilitate technology transfer from the lab to the marketplace are also welcome. To get an idea of the types of demos we’ve featured at past events, refer to our demo archive.

Fall 2003 Internet2 Member Meeting Demo Venues

Indianapolis Marriott Downtown
We would like to feature six to eight applications at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown, which is the site of the Fall 2003 Internet2 Member Meeting. There is no particular theme selected for these demos, so we welcome volunteers from all disciplines. University partnerships with federal agencies and corporate members are welcome, as are international partnerships. A large freight elevator will allow us to bring in oversize pieces of equipment and possibly even vehicles as part of the demos. In addition, the Marriott will provide space outside to park larger vehicles or equipment that can be used in conjunction with the demos going on inside. The demos will take place in Meeting Rooms 9 & 10, offering a total of 2392 square feet of space.

IMAX Theater
Fall member meeting demonstrations will also take place in conjunction with an evening gala reception, which will be held at the Indiana State Museum on 15 October. Reception attendees will be invited to view the feature film at the museum's IMAX Theater. Along with the feature presentation, we would welcome one to two interesting applications that take advantage of the IMAX technology, either by using the theater to project your own content or providing content for projection in IMAX format. The IMAX Theater seats 404 and features a stereo IMAX film projector, video projection system, wireless mic, and 35mm screen.

Dean & Barbara White Auditorium
Also in conjunction with an evening gala reception, which will be held at the Indiana State Museum, we are soliciting one to two arts and humanities related applications that are performance oriented. This performance-oriented demos could include music and dance, a distributed debate, or a distributed poetry or book reading. International collaborations and/or collaborations with remote partners are encouraged. The Dean & Barbara White Auditorium seats 243 and features studio quality lighting, an on-site audiovisual technician, and is 2802 square feet with a 16' x 28' stage. (Note that this venue is an auditorium, not a theatrical stage, and thus has no wings or flyspace—therefore, any event should require minimal, if any, sets.)

How to Submit Your Demo for Consideration

If you’re interested in demonstrating, please review the demonstration criteria and complete the demo submission form by 23 June. We may approve the demos as they are submitted, so earlier submissions are preferred.

Please Consider Presenting Also!

If you have a compelling research and education application, we are also looking for speakers during the Member Meeting itself. We are interested in presentations that talk about the problem to be solved, your approach to solving it, and what you've learned. These applications do not need to be complete or fully operational — demos of works in progress are also welcome.
