ResearchChannel Annual Meeting

27-28 October 2002

The ResearchChannel, a consortium of research universities and institutions focused on digital media management for integrating both traditional and extreme streaming and demand video, held it's annual meeting in conjunction with the Fall 2002 Internet2 Member Meeting.

ResearchChannel participants have the opportunity to distribute their video programming directly to the public nationwide via satellite and cable television to over 10 million households. This program repository is used as a testbed for real-time experiments in managing, storing, and distributing video programming via the Internet and exploring high bandwidth on-demand and streaming applications.

Internet2 members were invited to attend the ResearchChannel keynote presentation given by Nicholas Honeysett, director of web services for the Getty Museum. Attendees were also encouraged to attend Internet2/ ResearchChannel working group sessions which featured highlights of the successful implementation of an innovative digital asset management system (MediaWeb) for streaming and on-demand distribution, a recap of the ResearchChannel's collaboration with Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya in Barcelona at IGRID 2002, and an instructional session on content creation.

The Internet2/RC working group also met to discuss progress on its charter to explore high-quality demand and streaming video applications across Internet2 and NGI backbones, gigaPoPs and associated campus networks. For more information, contact Sephora DeRoest at (877-616-7265) or by email at
